Situation Overview
In early 2025, fighting between M23 militant group and Congolese security forces escalated rapidly. Intense conflict since early January has resulted in mass displacement and has exacerbated humanitarian needs, displacing hundreds of thousands and straining already scarce resources. Over 28 million people are now facing acute food insecurity – the highest number ever recorded in DRC – and the conflict is further deteriorating the health crisis, causing an increased need for essential medicines and medical supplies.
Humanitarian access remains a significant challenge to humanitarian actors who continue to provide life-saving aid. Goma International Airport, a critical logistics hub for the delivery of humanitarian aid, remains closed, and road closures and insecurity are further restricting humanitarian access. These airport closures and access issues are making it increasingly difficult and costly for NGOs to access Goma and surrounding towns.
Food assistance shipment reaches 30,000 individuals
Airlink’s Response
Through Airlink’s airline and logistics partners, Airlink is helping NGOs overcome the ongoing humanitarian access issues and logistics challenges by providing free-of-charge airfreight into regional hubs such as Kigali, Rwanda, Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and providing cross-border trucking into eastern DRC.
This transportation model has been critical to navigating the closure of Goma International Airport and the increased logistics costs that NGOs now face, allowing our NGO partners on-the-ground to address immediate needs of communities impacted.
Food production in eastern DRC has been devastated due to the recent conflict and displacement, and hospitals and health facilities are overwhelmed, with some completely destroyed and others struggling to resume operations.
