Situation Overview

Southern California is grappling with its most devastating winter wildfires in over four decades. On January 7, 2025, a relentless series of wildfires erupted across the Los Angeles metropolitan area and surrounding regions, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate or face urgent evacuation warnings. As of now, five major fires are active, with the Palisades Fire being the largest. It has already consumed thousands of acres and remains completely uncontained.

Wildfires are typically rare during this time of year, but a combination of factors—such as the fierce Santa Ana winds and the escalating impacts of climate change—have made the fires more intense and unpredictable, allowing them to spread with unprecedented speed and ferocity.

Airlink’s Role: Overcoming Logistical Hurdles For NGOs

At Airlink, we are dedicated to rapidly mobilizing support for communities in need by deploying our diverse network of partners, each bringing specialized expertise—from debris removal to child care. Every partner organization plays a crucial role in disaster response, and their collective efforts ensure that families and individuals receive the vital assistance they might otherwise be without.

With assistance from our airline partners, we help organizations reach the essential airports by providing both flight and financial support. This enables them to launch their responses quickly, extend their presence on the ground, and allocate more resources to the areas that need them most. Our coordination of passenger travel for responders—including emergency personnel, healthcare professionals, logisticians, and program staff—ensures they can reach key airports such as Los Angeles (LAX) and Hollywood Burbank (BUR) without delay.

As is standard practice for wildfire response, we anticipate deploying additional responders as conditions improve and it becomes safer for more nonprofits to send their teams and initiate their responses. Our goal is to continue scaling support as the situation stabilizes, ensuring that affected communities receive sustained and comprehensive assistance. We also anticipate supporting aid shipments with the first request for transport including hygiene kits, surgical masks, and N95s.

Humanitarian Needs

Airlink is committed to supporting residents affected by wildfire damage, food insecurity, and debris clearance, while also focusing on long-term recovery efforts. Our sponsored relief personnel will provide essential services, including child care, clearing fire-damaged debris, tree removal, tarping, temporary shelters, and distributing non-food essentials like hygiene kits, water, and fuel.

There are urgent needs specific to post-wildfire recovery, such as structural assessments for fire-damaged homes, recovery of personal belongings, and ash sifting for properties devastated by the flames. These specialized services are critical for helping residents salvage what they can, assess the safety of their homes, and begin rebuilding their lives after the devastation. Together, these efforts ensure a comprehensive approach to both immediate relief and long-term restoration.

How You Can Help

A coordinated response that delivers effective and appropriate aid is crucial. Despite well-intentioned efforts by individuals and companies to arrange private donations and giving drives, many supplies end up being unsuitable for the region, unused, and causing strain and congestion on local communities. As much as 60% of aid is often wasted.

What sets Airlink apart is our strategic approach to disaster response. We collaborate with a vetted network of over 200 NGOs to carefully assess each request for aid movement. Our expertise in logistics and our strong partnerships with airlines allow us to transport aid and responders efficiently and effectively, minimizing waste and maximizing impact.

Your donation is vital in ensuring a timely and effective response. Every contribution makes a difference—please consider donating today to support communities in crisis and help us deliver the right aid to the right place at the right time.
