On May 24, 2024, a massive landslide caused by heavy rainfall struck rural mountainous communities in central Enga Province, Papua New Guinea. Our thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones and have been impacted by this devastating disaster.
The unprecedented landslide destroyed six villages, with Kaokalam being the hardest-hit community. At least 2,000 people are feared dead, with most still buried under the mud. The landslide also blocked the Highlands Highway, the main route connecting the area to the capital, Port Moresby, and damaged food and clean water sources.
The total population of the impacted area is approximately 3,950, with over 1,500 individuals directly affected by the landslide. So far, 178 deaths have been confirmed, and the search for additional victims is ongoing. Displacement remains a significant concern in addition to disease outbreak.
Immediate needs include food, clothing, medical assistance, temporary shelters, water, blankets, mats, dignity kits (sanitary items), household items, health centers, water facilities, and sanitation services.
