Tropical Cyclone Idai made its second, more significant landfall during the night of 14 to 15 March 2019 near Beira City, Sofala Province, in central Mozambique. The cyclone brought torrential rains and winds to Sofala, Zambezia, Manica and Inhambane provinces. More than 1 million people have been impacted.

Cyclone Idai continued across land as a Tropical Storm and hit eastern Zimbabwe with heavy rains and strong winds. The storm caused high winds and heavy precipitation in Chimanimani and Chipinge districts causing riverine and flash flooding and subsequent deaths, destruction of livelihoods and properties. Rain from the cyclone has also affected drought-stricken southern Malawi, causing widespread flooding and access issues.

Airlink is working with NGO and airline partners to support the response in all three countries. Our focus is on transporting relief workers and emergency supplies to provide clean water, repair shelters, give medical care to survivors, and provide other critical assistance as people and communities recover.
