Our Response
Thanks to the support of Etihad Airways, Team Rubicon UK embarked on Phase 1 of their earthquake recovery mission in Gorkha Province, Nepal at the end of January.Â
Team Rubicon UK (TR UK) deployed on its first international mission in response to the devastating earthquake in Nepal in April 2015, and continued to support rebuilding efforts throughout the end of 2015. With this project, Team Rubicon UK is taking it to the next level – launching a long-term project to rebuild a remote school that serves hundreds of children every year.
The five-man team traveled 9 hours, including a two-hour hike by foot, from Kathmandu to Gorkha to work side-by-side with the community on this project. Over the course of five days, they confirmed viability of the site rebuild, which will provide classrooms with solar power for 300 children each year, many of whom are currently being educated in makeshift shelters without electricity or teaching implements. The team also facilitated the formation of a committee made up of local villagers; the committee will coordinate local workers and support for the project being carried out by the TR UK team.
Now that the team has secured government approval, they’ll return in March for Phase II to start reconstruction and provide technical advice on earthquake damage to a nearby hydroelectric turbine.
