Our Response
Santo Domingo and Ocoa in the Dominican Republic both lack sufficient infrastructure to supply healthcare for the poor in the region.  Paul Chester Children’s Hope Foundation’s (PCCHF) mission was to treat pediatric and general acute medical conditions as well as chronic medical conditions in these underserved areas, providing necessary care for people who would otherwise be unable to afford it.
On January 23, 2014, with the generous support of JetBlue, 25 medical volunteers – surgeons, nurses, and other medical professionals – traveled to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.  During the 10 day trip over 300 patients were screened and treated by PCCHF specialists at Santo Domingo’s Hospital General.  At the same time, PCCHF team also visited the mountain village of Ocoa where they screened and treated a further 100 patients.  Ten of which were transported back to Santo Domingo’s Hospital General for surgery.
PCCHF’s surgical team worked alongside the Dominican medical team performing critical procedures, general surgeries and corrective plastic surgery.  PCCHF’s surgeons also provided hands-on training and knowledge transfer during these medical procedures to the Dominican Medical Residents and surgical staff.  Specifically, the surgical procedures included non-cosmetic plastics such as burn scar revisions and disfiguring birth defects, umbilical hernias, thyroidectomies, eardrum repairs, hernias, cataracts and eye pterygiums.
