Hurricane Sandy (unofficially referred to as “Superstorm Sandy”) was the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, and the second-costliest hurricane in United States history. The storm made first made landfall in many countries throughout the Caribbean, before going on to affect 24 states along the eastern seaboard of the United States. Its storm surge hit New York City on October 29, flooding streets, tunnels and subway lines and cutting power in and around the city.
Team Rubicon rapidly mobilized Operation Greased Lightning to address flooding in hard-hit New York and New Jersey. In total, Airlink and JetBlue helped Team Rubicon deploy 128 volunteers, who in turn mobilized more than 10,000 local volunteers to close out over 900 work orders and save the affected areas approximately $3,825,000 in recovery and clean-up costs.
