Our Response

According to the Kenya National Survey for Persons with Disabilities (KNSPD), an estimated 70,000 people suffer from a physical disability in the country.  There is a great need to raise awareness on disability issues in Kenya.  The United Kingdom’s National Health Service donated 27 wheelchairs to the Olympia-Wafula Foundation for distribution throughout underserved parts of Kenya in order to help a small part of the population and raise awareness of the need for better healthcare and encourage empowerment for the disabled throughout the area.

Thanks to Brussels Airlines, Anne Wafula Strike, founder and manager of the Olympia-Wafula Foundation led a team of two to Kenya to distribute the donated wheelchairs to 4 communities in Kenya: Nandi, Thika, Nairobi, and Kisumu.  In addition, they addressed a variety of schools and community groups on disability awareness and acceptance in the country.  This was the first of two wheelchair distribution and disability outreach projects that the organization will carry out this year in Kenya.Â
