URGENT: Cyclone Freddy
(Malawi, Mozambique, and Madagascar)

Help Airlink send safe drinking water and food; shelter; access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services; and medical supplies to thousands of people across Malawi and Mozambique impacted by Cyclone Freddy.

Hundreds of people have been killed and at least 100,000 are now displaced across Malawi and Mozambique. The Cyclone first made landfall in Madagascar on February 21st, before hitting Mozambique and Zimbabwe and turning back out to sea. Freddy made its second landfall in Mozambique on March 11th. It continued as a tropical depression over southern Malawi – bringing torrential rains, flooding and mudslides.

A double disaster in Malawi: Malawi has been flighting a devastating cholera outbreak for over a year, and the floods from Cyclone Freddy could likely exacerbate the situation as access to clean water and hygiene will be further constrained.

Conflict in Mozambique: Ongoing conflict in the northern regions of the country have already displaced over 1 million people and the impacts of Cyclone Freddy increase concern for the already immense humanitarian needs.

Relentless cyclones in Madagascar: Madagascar avoided the worst impacts of Cyclone Freddy, but it was Madagascar’s 8th cyclone in 13 months. Due to the long lasting effects from the cyclones which damaged critical infrastructure and flooded farms – humanitarian support for Madagascar is needed beyond just the impact of Cyclone Freddy.

Support our response: Airlink is fulfilling requests for free of charge flights for experts in medical, WASH, food, shelter; and cargo requests for delivery of related material aid. Demand rises daily as NGO teams report in.
